Man Hangs Himself After Loosing N22,000 To Sporting Bet In Uyo, Akwa Ibom State

A man in his mid 30s, known as Mr. Uchenna, hanged himself in his room along Abak road in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital, in the wake of losing N22,000 to sports bet.

It was gathered that Uchenna was a ceaseless sports gambler with Bet Naija and that he took the said total he lost from his boss with the expectation that he would pay the money back when he wins.

Uchenna's flat mate, Ifiok, said the deceased had been lamenting subsequent to losing the money and got himself into a shocking state.

In his words "I went out to purchase something from Plaza (the downtown area) and on getting back I found that everywhere was locked. I knew Uchenna hasn't gone out and I pondered what must have likely made him to lock himself up. I attempted to open the door for some minutes without success until I needed to force it open. I then discovered him hanging from the ceiling fan in our room and his eyes had popped out," Ifiok said.

A neighbor, Uto Udobia, decried the high rate of sports betting which has become very common among the youths and even elders in the area.

She called on the  government and other regulatory agencies to check  sports betting activities, stressing that sports betting is. Pure gambling and it is now fuelling wrongdoing among the youths and  furthermore wrecking their career.
